Effective Gout Treatments
Gout is a serious condition of the joints but many gout treatments are available by prescription from a doctor. The most regularly prescribed drugs are NSAIDs – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprofen. These drugs, however, are not suitable for everyone and can have serious side effects. They should never be used for more than 2 weeks at a time. The alternative gout treatments include the use of steroids. Steroids can be taken orally or injected directly into the afflicted joint for fast relief but are not appropriate for everyone. Another gout treatment includes an intravenous infusion of pegloticase every two weeks but is only available to those intolerant of other medications. Xanthine oxidase inhibitors are generally prescribed after a flare-up to prevent recurrence of symptoms. Uricosurics are also available for correcting and controlling uric acid levels. These gout treatments require professional medical supervision and should never be attempted without the explicit instruction of a doctor.
